The naming guidelines clearly says station names should avoid the names of buildings, which would include schools I believe. I certainly hope this will not set a bad precedent for school alumni to start clamouring for their school names on important public transport landmarks. I was thankful, for example, that "Kent Ridge" was selected over " National University" despite being an alumni from NUS.

However, I would note that "City Hall", "Expo" and "Stadium" can be said to set bad examples in this regard. ;)

Downtown Line 1 contract awarded to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co

SINGAPORE : The Land Transport Authority has awarded a S$231.9 million contract for the Downtown Line 1 to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co.

This is for the design, construction and completion of Downtown Line 1 Promenade Station and its associated tunnels.

The Downtown Line 1 Promenade Station is adjacent to the existing Circle Line Promenade station and will be constructed below the Circle Line Promenade station.

When completed, Downtown Line 1 will be a 4.3-kilometre fully underground rail transit system with six stations that will connect the East-West Line at Bugis station to the North-East Line at Chinatown station.

Construction is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2008 and is targeted to be completed in 2013.

Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co is a major civil engineering contractor from China and is involved in bored tunnelling work on Circle Line 1, 3, 4 and 5 projects. - CNA/ms

Rochor Station -> I was thinking of Tekka or maybe name it after osme prominent Indian personality who have contribute greatly to the Indian communityl ike maybe Rajaratnam or Devan Nair
Stevens Station ->Whitley, there used ot be a Whitley food centre nearby and Whitley school
Duchess Station ->Hwa Chong, that school has a rich history to be remembered of
Sixth Avenue Station ->Eng Neo, close to Eng Neo and I think Eng Neo is named after someone important in Singapore history
Blackmore Station -> Rifle Range, close to the Rifle Range Road and easily recognised by people
Beauty World Station ->Bukit Timah, the original Bukit Timah area and close to Bukit Timah Hill
Hillview Station ->Remains, will serve residents of Hillview area
Cashew Station ->Remains, was thinking of Assumption but Assumption doesn't give a good meaning
Petir Station ->Bukit Panjang, will be linked ot Bukit Panjang LRT and Interchange

I generally prefer names in Asian languages over western ones, although it's not possible to come up with feasible ones in several locations. I hate the "Cashew Station" name, for one, but there just dosent seem to be a good alternative. "Zhenghua" perhaps, for that was the older Chinese name for the area? Or perhaps "Hazel Park Station"? At least that sounds more professional than Cashew!

That area is known as Sixth Av infromally, there is no need for the other avenues to be used as the name.

1. LTA is pleased to invite the public to contribute suggestions for the names of the nine Downtown Line 2 (DTL2) stations. With the recent announcement of the alignment and station locations of DTL2, working names based on station location are being used for ease of reference.

2. We are now seeking feedback and ideas from the public on the official names for these stations, with the exception the three interchange stations at Little India, Newton and Botanic Gardens as these are the official station names.

Avenues to send in suggestions

3. The public can send their suggestions to LTA via our portal at http://talk2lta.lta.gov.sg. Participants will have the option to keep the current working names or suggest new ones for as many of the nine stations as they choose. Participants are required to also briefly provide the rationale for their suggested names to help us understand the context of the choice and suitability. The closing date for suggestions is on Tuesday, 26 August 2008.

4. All suggestions will be collated and short-listed names will be announced for public polling in September 2008. The chosen names are subject to the approval of the Street and Building Naming Board.

5. In addition to the Talk2LTA portal, the public is also welcome to send in their suggestions by fax and mail. Please indicate "Feedback for DTL2 Station Naming" on your fax or envelope.

Criteria for the naming of MRT stations

6. The general guidelines for naming MRT stations are that the name should:

Identify the location readily so that all commuters can easily remember the names and identify the area of the station
Illustrate the history and heritage of the station surroundings if relevant
Reflect the multi-racial, multi-cultural character of Singapore if possible.
Also, stations should not be named after public structures, or commercial and residential developments.

7. The nine DTL2 stations involved in this station naming exercise are:

Duchess Station*
Sixth Avenue Station*
Blackmore Station*
Beauty World Station*
Hillview Station*
Cashew Station*

About Downtown Line 2

8. This 16.6km underground rail system comprises one depot and 12 stations, including three interchange stations at Little India, Newton and Botanic Gardens to connect commuters to the North East Line, North South Line and the Circle Line respectively.

Please refer to the attached maps for the location of DTL2 stations and alignment.
